Due to the natural resistance mechanisms possessed by this bacterium, its susceptibility to many antibiotics is reduced, and during treatment it can also develop resistance to antibiotics to which it was initially susceptible. In infections caused by multidrug-resistant P. aeruginosa isolates, combination antibiotic therapies are recommended to increase treatment success and to prevent or reduce the development of resistance. Piperacillin/tazobactam, a penicillin/beta-lactamase inhibitor combination, exhibits high in vitro efficacy against P. aeruginosa due to its resilience against beta-lactam resistance mechanisms.
